Religious Formation
Sacraments
Pope John XXIII School is the parish school of two parishes. Sacramental programs are generally carried out in connection with both parishes. First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation will be held at both St. Nicholas and St. Mary’s parishes. A student who is not a member of either parish may choose which parish he/she wishes to receive the sacraments in. Sacramental preparation will be carried on in a cooperative effort with both parishes’ Religious Education programs. Information will be mailed to the students’ homes regarding sacramental meetings and preparations.
Liturgies
The school community will gather at least once a month for a liturgy prepared by the students. The opening school Mass in September and the school Mass in May will be held at St. Mary’s Church. Catholic School’s Week will open with an all school mass at St. Mary’s Church and close with a liturgy at St. Nicholas Church. All students and parents are required to attend both of these services regardless of their parish affiliation.
Religious Studies
Religion will be taught at each grade level for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. The religious education curriculum aims to develop within each student an intellectual grasp of doctrine, according to age level and maturity, and to create an atmosphere which fosters prayer and the development of a personal relationship with Jesus. It encourages active participation in the sacraments and life of the Church, and supports a Catholic value system which provides opportunities for service to others, respect for self, and a lifestyle of integrity.
Children who are non-Catholic are expected to participate in studies and be in attendance at liturgies, but not participate in the sacraments. We honor other religious backgrounds and convictions and the parents’ rights to pass on their own beliefs.
