September 29, 2016

Dear Parents,

I hope that you have all seen the unexpected, exciting 1 in 100 chance to win two tickets to the first Cubs playoff game. Check your email and help us sell out of all 100 raffle tickets in record time! All sales will end when we reach 100 or on Wednesday at noon. Even if you’re not the raffle winner, it’s a win for your child because every dollar spent will come to the school. Check your email for the link!

Like the 2016 Cubs team, winning and excelling are key themes for us at Pope John XXIII School. The focus of my letters has been leaning toward cheering on the many events and activities of our school. In this letter, I’d like to take a different direction and highlight some of the inner workings of education here. This year our school is one of forty in the Archdiocese that will be reviewed and visited as part of a system-wide accreditation process. The accreditation is awarded by North Central Association for Accreditation through AdvancEd. Our visit is scheduled in February of this school year.

There are several components involved including an on-site visit by a team of educators who will spend time in classrooms and meet with faculty. Prior to that visit, artifacts will be collected to be shared with the team members. These documents and pieces are produced by faculty teams and myself to provide evidence of achievement levels, methodology and the assessments used as part of our teaching/learning.

Another part of the process involves surveys that are sent to faculty, students, and parents. Each group has a unique survey which is available online during a designated period. The information gathered can be used by the school to guide conversations and inform decisions about the various parts of our mission and goals as well as to provide perspectives to the visiting team. I hope that when these are sent to you, probably in early November, you will take a few minutes and answer the questions.

The goal of this whole process is to ensure a cycle of continuous school improvement throughout the Archdiocese and within each school. The strategic plan that was completed at the end of last year is a clear indicator of the thoughtful approach to remaining a leader in educational excellence and vitality that Pope John XXIII School has always supported. This next piece of thinking, planning and documenting is one we are excited to nurture into more ways to bring out the best in each of our students.

Warm regards,

Gail Hulse
Principal

September 22, 2016

Dear Parents,

Wanted to highlight two events that are taking place this weekend. They are very different, but share the same spirit of community and service that is Pope John XXIII School of St. Nicholas and St. Mary Parishes

Fr. Tito will be formally installed as pastor of St. Nicholas on Saturday at the 4:30 Mass. Bishop Kane will officiate and you are all invited to be a part of this special event. As his school family, we have created a spiritual bouquet to give to him on this happy occasion. We hope that our prayers are a source of strength and joy as he shepherds us in the years ahead.

In a rather different showing of support and community, we also want to be sure you know that you are invited to Panther Palooza on Sunday night at 7PM at Firehouse in Evanston. Check out the flyer for details. Walk-ins welcome. The Pope John Athletic Committee might have come up with a way for fans to cheer for the Bears and end the night smiling!

There is certainly no shortage of highlights when I sit down to write this weekly letter. Besides events to bring people together, we have the daily events of our classrooms. These are inspired, planned and produced by our talented and bright faculty. I hope that you have all enjoyed – and found – Ms. Lampa’s clever “Teacher Tuesday” posting.. On Tuesday each week, you’ll find out more about one of our awesome educators! It appears on Facebook and our website home page. So far Ms. Miller, Mr. Foreman, Ms. Hlavacek and Ms. Turbov have been the stars. Wait ‘til you see who’s next.

Speaking of seeing who’s next, the Parents Association has a couple of open spots on its organizational chart! If you would like to be part of the planning fun, please contact Molly O’Brien or Linda Brown, our co-presidents and they can fill you in on the jobs and descriptions. Room parents are also needed in several of our classrooms. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your classroom teacher or the PA folks. Many hand make a big difference!

Thank you for all that you do to encourage and motivate your child. As our partnerships strengthen, the education of each child strengthens as well. We appreciate your commitment and give it back to you in kind!

Regards,

Gail Hulse
Principal

September 15, 2016

Dear Parents,

Our first spirit day will be tomorrow, Friday the 16th! It will be a day that students may come to school dressed in their PJ23 team uniform jerseys, PJ spirit wear or dressed in shirts/blouses of blue and/or yellow-gold. Students should always be dressed in outfits appropriate for Catholic school students. When in doubt, pick something else:)

A special part of this Spirit Day will be a school Pep Rally in the cafeteria where we will introduce our fall sports teams and cheer with our own cheerleading squad. This will be at 2:30. It is a great kick-off to homecoming weekend for our Evanston Catholic Football team and for St. Mary’s Block Party. The former on Sat. morning at Central Park in Evanston/Skokie and the latter on Sat. evening outside of St. Mary Church. Come out and enjoy.

More cause for cheering are the school results of our ASPIRE test given in April of last school year to our 3rd through 8th graders. The results are finally ready. For those of you able to be at Curriculum Night, you received our school results in a comparative chart by grade. I am sending that as an attachment with this e blast as well. Today, your child’s individual results will be available to you to read or print through PowerSchool. New families were sent directions for creating PowerSchool accounts for your family. If you did not receive this, please contact Mr. Nelson and he can get that for you. chris.nelson@popejohn23.org There will be a bit longer wait for results for our transfer students since getting those results involved a few more steps. We hope to have those results to you early next week.

In addition to the report you receive if you had a child in 3-8 grade last year , we receive a great deal of information on achievement at specific benchmarks for the standards that comprise each subject area. We will be analyzing these and using that data to inform decisions we make over the course of the school year for both individual students and grade level teaching.

I will close here so that you have time to go over the other information in this week’s e-blast. There is always a lot to look at and we know you have lots to do. Please make reading the information you find here one of the important items on that to-do list. I am constantly challenged to find “the answer” to how to get everyone to respond to the information that is sent out. It’s a challenge that I pass on – literally and figuratively. We have many opportunities and options. They come to you each week in this e-blast. Open and respond and make someone happy.

Warm regards
Gail Hulse,
Principal

September 1, 2016

Dear Parents,

We are completing our first full week of school and we have lots of milestones and Pope’s Pride moments already logged in. We have made many new students and families feel welcome here. We take pride in the way our new students have added to our class energy and adapted to the way we do things. We look forward to their continued sharing of ideas and experiences.

We have new members of our teaching team to introduce who also bring great energy and talents to our school. Joining our preschool team are Andrea Infante-Martinez and Kristin Kattner as teacher assistants. Andrea has experience working with preschoolers but she may be most familiar to you from her work at St. Nick’s rectory. Kristin Kattner’s degree is in early childhood education from Columbia College. Our littlest friends are making them both feel very welcome.

Our newest addition to the school faculty is Ms. Fran Mazur, our art teacher. Ms. Mazur is an accomplished artist with a variety of awards and shows in her credits. Her teaching experience includes working as a teaching artist with A.R.T. (Art Resources in Teaching) and LUMA (Loyola University Museum of Art). We are looking forward to having her work with our students to explore the many facets of art.

In addition to faculty who are new to the school, many of our faculty are new to you as a family. Ms. Lampa will be publishing a Tuesday Teacher feature to showcase the individuals who make up our amazing faculty. We hope you will enjoy it.

Our curriculum nights will be happening over the next two weeks. Next week on Thursday, September 8, we invite our Preschool through 4th grade parents to come to school at 7PM to hear about the learning planned for the year ahead. The following week, our 5th through 8th grade teachers invite you to come to school on Wednesday, Sept. 14th to hear presentations on the curriculum and projects in our middle grades. Please mark your calendars!

One more very important request. It is essential that we have the mandated paperwork for your child(ren). Emergency forms for all and medical forms for specified grades must be turned in to the office. This is for the safety of your child as well as for our compliance with regulations. We appreciate your prompt attention if this hasn’t been turned in. Thank you to those who have already taken care of this. This is something that is redone annually. Yes, it does look overly familiar for many of you.

As always, please read the list of attachments to this week’s e-blast. Best to read all in case it’s something you didn’t know you wanted to know:)

Warm regards,
Gail Hulse

Principal

August 25, 2016

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the first Thursday e-blast of the 2016-2017 school year. I’d like to begin by thanking some people who have gone above and beyond in setting a great tone for this year. In no definitive order and with great thanks to all who have done so much and are not mentioned specifically: Thank you to our new pastors, Fr. Tito and Fr. Kevin, for their commitment to the mission of their parish school.   Thank you to Ms. Rose and Ms. Lampa for working throughout the summer to make our new families feel welcomed and our veterans feel ready. Thank you to Fernando Ramos and Mark Marino for their tireless efforts to get our school building prepared for a new year. Thank you to the Parents’ Association for raising funds to give our lobby a much-needed facelift. Thank you to the Cornue “Family Crew” for first tending our neglected plantings. Thank you to Mr. Onofrey, Mr. Babiak and Mrs. Patterson for phase two – planting attractive flowers and ivy in our planters all around the school on their days off. Thank you to Mrs. Gumiran for the lobby bulletin board recognizing the Class of 2017! Thank you in big letters to our amazing faculty for all that they have done and will do! Thank you to our students for coming to school willing and enthusiastic about what the world and PJXXIII hold for them. Lastly, (for today only) thank you to the parents, past and present, who have partnered with the school to create a highly regarded place of learning and community of caring for generations of children.

There were lots of moments captured at yesterday’s opening. Our pastors joined us in the cafeteria at 11:30 for an all school kick off of our theme: “You Are the Light of the World”. They blessed us and prayed for a good year. Special thanks to our 8th graders for recreating a fourth grade moment with Mrs. Marino and helping us with a song we’ll be singing during this year. “Learning to Be the Light” is the title, what we are doing and why we are here.

We are hoping that the sun lights up for tomorrow evening when all are invited to head to Lee St. Beach around 6:00 or 6:30 and meet up to eat together. Bring your dinner and join the fun. Details can be found in this blast. We hope that you will set aside a bit of time each Thursday evening to read the information we are sending. There is a lot going on and we will try and give you details and notice on all.

I have a correction to the parking/traffic flow note that was emailed yesterday. It stated incorrectly that our Kdg. would enter and leave school from the Washington entrance. That is no longer the case. Kdg. enters from the playground with all other classes. Kdg. will continue to dismiss from the Washington entrance. The rest of the notice is accurate and important!! Please, for the safety of all, learn the routes into and out of the school grounds.

There is much to enjoy and learn in the weeks ahead. I will let you explore this first eblast!

Warm regards,

Gail Hulse, Principal
