At Pope John XXIII School, our elementary program is designed to inspire confident, curious learners through a balanced approach to academics, faith, and character development. Our curriculum aligns with Common Core standards and the Archdiocese of Chicago, providing a strong foundation in mathematics, language arts, social studies, science, reading, and religion to support each student’s growth.
Through an intentional blend of academics, faith, and social-emotional learning, our elementary program provides a well-rounded foundation, inspiring students to grow as learners, leaders, and compassionate members of the community.
- Core Curriculum: We use the Savvas myView Literacy program for reading and language arts, and EnVision Math by Scott Foresman for mathematics, ensuring consistency and mastery from Kindergarten through 5th grade.
- 4th and 5th Grade Departmentalization: In 4th and 5th grade, students experience a departmentalized model to prepare them for middle school. This structure not only builds familiarity with changing classrooms but also enhances alignment in learning. One teacher leads instruction in math and science for both grades, while another teaches language arts and social studies, creating a cohesive academic progression.
- Character Development: All students also benefit from the Caring School Community program, which fosters a school-wide culture of kindness, respect, and belonging. This program includes direct teaching of social skills, relationship-building activities, and a proactive approach to discipline. Addressing the unique needs of students and staff in grades K-8, it helps create an environment where every student feels valued and connected.
- Hands-On Exploration: Teachers have access to our science and STEAM labs, providing opportunities for hands-on exploration and experimentation that bring classroom learning to life. Students engage in science and technology activities that stimulate critical thinking and creativity, reinforcing academic concepts through real-world applications.
- Math Competitions: Beginning in 3rd grade, students have the opportunity to participate in local math competitions. Competing not only sharpens their math skills but also boosts confidence, encourages teamwork, and fosters a love for problem-solving. These events are invaluable in helping students apply their knowledge in a challenging, rewarding environment.
- Specials and Leadership Opportunities: Students participate in weekly specials like Spanish, STEAM, Music, Art, and Physical Education. Daily recess on our playground, regular library visits, and opportunities to help prepare and lead our all-school Masses enhance their school experience, supporting both academic growth and personal development.
