In middle school, students at Pope John XXIII School experience a departmentalized structure, learning from subject-specific teachers who provide a challenging yet supportive academic environment. Mathematics and English Literature courses are grouped by grade-level ability, with accelerated programs available in both subjects to meet the needs of each student. Accelerated math students, who are Evanston residents, have the opportunity to advance by attending a Geometry class at Evanston Township High School (ETHS). Our faculty set high academic expectations while also serving as mentors, supporting students in achieving their personal and academic goals.
With rigorous academics, a variety of electives, hands-on projects, and unique leadership opportunities, our middle school program prepares students for high school and beyond, cultivating well-rounded individuals ready to excel.
- Math and Science: Middle school students engage in hands-on learning, including participation in our annual Science Fair, where all students compete locally. Those who qualify advance to regional and state competitions, presenting their projects and competing with other middle school students, a valuable opportunity to foster scientific curiosity and critical thinking. Our middle school math curriculum focuses on developing a deep understanding of key concepts while encouraging logical reasoning and problem-solving. Differentiated instruction ensures that each student is challenged at their level, fostering confidence and proficiency in mathematics.
- Literature and Language Arts: Our middle school literature and language arts program is designed to cultivate a love of reading, improve writing skills, and enhance communication abilities. Students are encouraged to engage critically with a wide range of texts while developing the foundational skills needed for effective written and oral expression. Our literature curriculum exposes students to a diverse selection of texts, including classic novels, contemporary works, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. In language arts, students strengthen their writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills through a variety of assignments, including essays, creative writing, research projects, and presentations.
- Social Studies and Religion: Our programs aim to develop students' understanding of the world around them, while also fostering strong moral values rooted in faith. Both subjects encourage critical thinking, active participation, and a deeper awareness of global and local issues, as well as personal beliefs and responsibilities. The middle school Social Studies curriculum focuses on history, geography, economics, and government, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of the world’s past and present. Religion classes at Pope John XXIII School emphasize the values of faith, compassion, and service. Students explore Catholic teachings, scripture, and church history, with a focus on developing a personal relationship with God and understanding the role of faith in everyday life.
- Specials and Electives: Sixth graders participate in weekly specials such as STEAM, Music, Art, and Physical Education, and all middle school students benefit from access to our library and playground for daily recess, promoting enrichment and social interaction. In 7th and 8th grade, students enjoy daily elective periods, such as debate, microbiology, chess, civics, arts and crafts, and world travel.
- Life Skills: Middle schoolers receive a weekly Advisory Life Skills class led by our school counselor, where they discuss essential topics such as digital citizenship, executive functioning, communication skills, and personal responsibility, preparing them for both high school and life beyond.
- Service Learning: In addition to their academic studies, 7th and 8th-grade students are expected to complete service hours. This service requirement instills a sense of responsibility, empathy, and community engagement, helping students recognize their role in contributing to the well-being of others and inspiring lifelong habits of service and compassion.
