At Pope John XXIII School, we are committed to fostering linguistic proficiency and cultural awareness through our comprehensive World Language Program. Our curriculum offers immersive instruction in Spanish, French, and Latin, tailored to each educational stage.
Early Childhood Language Intensive Program (ECLIP)
In partnership with the University of Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education, we implement the Early Childhood Language Intensive Program (ECLIP) for our youngest learners. This initiative provides daily Spanish immersion for students in Pre-K through 1st grade, integrating language learning with core subjects to build a strong foundation in both Spanish and English. ECLIP emphasizes bilingualism and biliteracy, preparing students for future academic success and cultural competence. Spanish Instruction for Grades 2-5
Building upon the ECLIP foundation, students in grades 2 through 5 receive Spanish instruction twice a week for 40 minutes. These sessions focus on enhancing vocabulary, conversational skills, and cultural understanding, reinforcing the language skills acquired in earlier years. French Instruction for Grades K-5
Starting in Kindergarten, students engage in weekly French lessons that introduce basic language skills and explore the diverse cultures of French-speaking countries. This early exposure broadens students' global perspectives and linguistic abilities. Latin Program for Grades 6-8
Pope John XXIII School is proud to be one of only two schools in Evanston offering Latin as a language option for middle school students. Our Latin program provides students with a unique opportunity to explore the roots of modern languages, enhancing their vocabulary, understanding of grammar, and critical thinking skills. By studying Latin, students gain a strong foundation in language structure that supports their learning in English and other languages while connecting them to classical literature, history, and Roman culture. The Latin curriculum emphasizes reading comprehension, translation, and the rich cultural heritage of ancient Rome. Through this program, students develop analytical skills and deepen their appreciation for the linguistic and cultural influences that shape Western civilization. Latin at Pope John XXIII offers a distinctive and enriching experience that prepares students for future language study and fosters a love for classical learning. Middle School Language Options
In middle school, students choose to study Spanish, French, or Latin as a core subject, with daily classes held in our dedicated World Language Lab. This immersive environment allows for deeper linguistic engagement and cultural exploration, preparing students for advanced language studies. Interactive International Café
Our World Language Lab features an International Café, an immersive space where students practice their language skills in real-world contexts. Through activities such as conversational practice, cultural simulations, and culinary experiences, students enhance their language proficiency while gaining a deeper appreciation for global cultures. By integrating programs like ECLIP and providing diverse language offerings, Pope John XXIII School equips students with the linguistic skills and cultural insights necessary to thrive in an interconnected world. |
